The
Wood
All Signature Sign Studio signs start with locally grown high
quality western red cedar. We typically use cedar graded 4 Clear
& Better, kiln dried and edged (vertical) grain. Kiln drying
ensures that the moisture content is stable and the sign will
not warp. Edge grain means that the blasting process will bring
out the tight valley/ridge effect so unique to red cedar. All
lumber is milled locally. Each board runs the full length of the
sign. Joints will stand out during the blasting process so we
consider this a substandard process. The sign is laminated with
a waterproof glue. We have some signs still in use after almost
20 years. Large signs are reinforced with steel rods to ensure
long-term stability and strength. Once the boards are glued up
the sign shape is cut out and sanded by our craftsmen.
The Design
We can design from your sketch mailed or faxed to us, any graphic
file you have worked in or just call us to start the process.
We can design it anyway you want. Our in house design team are
experts in coming up with exactly what you need. Once the design
has been finalized it is cut into a stencil and positioned on
the wood blank.

Sandblasting
This is the make or break point of the sign. Only someone with
extensive experience and a deft touch can properly blast the exact
amount of material away yet leave clean edges. Our blasters are
experts with years of experience. We use only environmentally
benign sand during this process.
Sign Finishing
All signs receive a minimum of 3 coats of long lasting varnish
which contains a U.V. inhibitor. When complete it looks almost
like they are coated with glass. We also finish with high quality
paints and sign lettering enamels.
Additional Painting or Finishing
Gilding: We also offer 23 carat gold leaf finishing
for a really rich finish. Gold never tarnishes and stands out
in a way that a simple photograph can not convey.
We can also provide faux finishes and full color artisitic renderings.

Maintenance
Our Sandblasted signs will last for years but dirt from rain,
snow and pollution will cause a build up of grime on your sign.
Wash the sign in mild soap and water. Use a soft cloth or brush
and rinse with non-pressurized water. Never pressure wash your
sign, it will permanently damage it. We recommend you do this
once a year. After 5 - 6 years we may recommend re-coating if
your sign is exposed to really adverse weather conditions year
round.
